Baldur's Gate 3: How To Beat Grym (Adamantine Forge Boss)

To forge Adamantine gear in Baldur's Gate 3, players must defeat Grym. However, players can use certain tricks to tip the odds in the party's favor.

To claim their prized Adamantine items from the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3, players must battle and defeat Grym, the Adamantine Golem. Grym is a Level 8 Construct boss enemy with a massive HP pool, high Defense, and immunities and resistances to many different damage types. This makes it extraordinarily tough to take down, but luckily, there are several strategies and tricks players can use to even the odds.

Players can trigger the Grym boss fight by interacting with the Lava Valve in the Adamantine Forge, after recovering gear molds and Mithral Ore for forging Adamantine gear. Before the fight, it’s highly recommended that players take one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Long Rests to recover health and spell slots, and potentially swap in new party members. Companions with high mobility, ranged weapons, and tanking capabilities are all essential.

The best way to defeat Grym quickly is to use the hostile, lava-filled environment of the Adamantine Forge against it.

The Golem receives the Superheated debuff as long as it’s in contact with lava. Every few turns, the lava will actually drain from the Adamantine Forge, so players should keep one of their party members standing by the Lava Valve at all times. This allows players to trigger it to flood the area with lava, keeping Grym debuffed throughout the fight.

Grym also automatically attacks the last party member who damaged it. This is a critical weakness, as long as players are using one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s best party compositions. Players can structure their turns and attacks so Grym only targets the party tank. As its attention is always focused on the last character who damaged it, players can lure it into danger and take it out quickly.

Players should lure Grym over to the Crucible in the middle of the Adamantine Forge platform.

As it attacks the last enemy who damaged it, players can do this fairly easily by having their tank stand on the raised Crucible platform, attacking Grym from range. Once Grym is near the platform, have the character standing there jump clear, and trigger the Forge Lever.

Players can trigger the Forge Lever by having a character standing there to interact with it, or by hitting it with a ranged attack.

This causes the Adamantine Forge’s Hammer to slam down on the Crucible, giving Grym a nice whack, knocking it Prone, and taking out a massive chunk of health. Using the terrain and environment is one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s best tricks, and players should be able to easily take Grym down with a few swings of the hammer, even on Tactician difficulty.

Using this tactic will prevent players from earning A Grym Fate, an achievement for killing Grym without using the Forge Hammer.

Players can also defeat Grym without the Forge Hammer, but this is much more difficult due to Grym’s immunities and resistances. Grym is resistant or even immune to most elemental damage types but is vulnerable to Bludgeoning damage. To deal Bludgeoning damage, players can use certain weapon types such as maces, flails, mauls, and warhammers.

To defeat Grym, players still need to make sure that the golem is constantly receiving the Superheated debuff. Keeping Grym’s focus on tank characters and away from casters and support characters essentially allows players to gradually wear it down.

Defeating Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3 allows players to claim their Adamantine gear and the Grymskull Helm, a unique helmet that grants Fire Damage resistance and a powerful immunity to critical hits.
